The pier stretching into Hanalei Bay is perhaps the iconic landmark of the area. The view from below transports us to world that belies the rhythmic activity and energy of local and visiting beachgoers alike that descend on the world-famous bay every day. From this perspective, the ocean is transformed by a longer shutter speed into a calm, cottony-soft blanket with only the slightest hints of waves. Come by; relax, enjoy, and experience the calming spirit of the Island from under the Pier!

Lush forests nestled in the valleys of Kaua‘i are quintessentially Hawai‘ian. Almost no scene more ably captures the imagination than the views that await from above, within the mountainous interiors of Kaua‘i. Located but a brief drive and hike from the center of Līhu‘e, this breathtaking scene was a suitable reward for persevering through a hike in a soaking shower right before sunset. With just enough of a break in the rain and cloud cover, we were treated to the deep yellow-oranges and spectacular diffuse light on the iridescent foliage of the valley.

The Hawai‘ian sunset! Wait just a few more minutes once the sun has dipped gently below the horizon, and you’ll often be treated to a brilliant magenta and orange surprise as the clouds light up and share their reflection with the ocean below. Find a sheltered enough cove and a calm glassy lagoon filled with the last liquid gold of the day will be all yours to enjoy.

Located along the the rugged island perimeter, tucked into the unspoiled and unrivalled Nā Pali coastline lies a hidden pristine valley like no other – the Kalalau Valley. Flanked by towering cliffs, the isolated beach where the valley meets the Pacific is undoubtedly the crown jewel of the area, and ultimate reward for many a determined adventurer, braving the 11mile hike of Hanakapi‘ai! From the Pu‘u O Kila lookout, it’s always a gamble whether you’ll be able to experience its grandeur, for the almost ubiquitous fog sitting densely within the bowl. With great luck and impeccable timing, your senses will be treated to scenery unlike anywhere else on Earth. Enjoy!

In the light of the setting sun, the iridescent rock shelves at Ke’e beach rest firmly alongside the calm lapping of the ocean – sheltered from the not too distant fury of the waves crashing against of the Nā Pali coast. Blanketed in a rising mist of salt spray, the imposing mountainside is deceptively subdued within a soothing orange glow and emerging blanket of cloud cover – the end of another day on the beautiful northwest shore of the Garden Isle of Kaua‘i.

Not to be outdone by the fancier sailboats dotting the bay, this six-man outrigger canoe patiently rests; prepared – but waiting. Heading out to the open ocean will unfortunately have to wait a while longer, while the calm early morning atmosphere is transformed into another spectacular Hawai‘ian day. Maybe then her paddlers will awaken to take her out on the calm summertime waves of Kaua‘i’s north shore.

With the only active volcanoes, the Big Island of Hawai’i promises unique terrain at every turn. Awaken Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of fire, and you’re in for a once-in-a-lifetime experience! With tide pools brimming with tiny aquatic life, a glassy mirror awaits right next to the turbulent energy of the frantically filling and receding blowhole. Look no further for the perfect representation of the Hawai‘ian life – the constant energy and serenity of nature perfectly in balance.

Before the first direct rays of sunlight reach over the mountains surrounding Hanalei Bay, determined fishermen are firmly established, with lines in the ocean, hoping to reel in an early catch during the runs of young weke or oama (the Hawai‘ian yellow-striped goat fish). Focused on the swarming underwater school, most are completely oblivious to the changing colors and mood of the bay as the sun gently rises and gives the sky and ocean below its once-a-day streaks of magenta and orange paint.

Around every corner a breathtaking scene awaits on the island of Kaua‘i. In this case, just around the corner the sun rises, bringing with it new life for the waves crashing against the rocks, filling rock pools and spawning mini waterfalls. Get out early and wait for the show – refreshing beauty and amazement are guaranteed!

Along the Island’s south shore, extend from Keoneloa beach (aka “Shipwrecks”) is a miles-long path through the cliffs of Maha‘ulepu. Majestic mountain ranges on one side, cliffs and the energetic Pacific on the other.  Get close to the edge, and you’ll be treated to the sounds and sights of waves crashing against the cliffs, to routine sightings of green sea turtles (the Hawai‘ian “Honu”) bobbing at the surface in one of their favorite locations. You’ll also not need to wait long to see a fisherman or two relaxing with a pole, just hoping for a cliff-side catch!

With countless gallons of incinerating lava pouring into the ocean, viewed from the cliffs above, or at the center of the action in the ocean, nature’s creative fury puts on a spectacular display on the southern shore of the Big Island of Hawai‘i. Instantly-boiling, the ocean water violently rises into a thick plume of steam towering high above the land as impressively as rapidly cooling lava bursts like shrapnel from beneath the surface of the Pacific. Nowhere else on Earth can you currently experience this stunning spectacle, let alone from mere feet away!

There is perhaps no more photographed location on Kaua‘i than the spectacular ridges of the world-renowned Nā Pali coastline. Towering above the northwestern shores, these sharply-rising ridges are some of the most imposing in the world and provide equally stunning and challenging hikes of a lifetime. Seen from this vantage at the “end of the road” at Ke‘e beach, the sunset is a forever changing spectacle – dramatically different ever day. “Blazing Orange” was the vibrant hue of the day – crashing waves and thick clouds of salty mist filling the air, indelibly seared onto “film”. Pause, imagine and experience sunset at the edge of the World!

A constant stream of liquid fire rushing from deep within the extensive labyrinths of lava tubes extending from the Kilauea volcano plunges with unstoppable energy into the ocean from cliffs of its own making. The surrounding air is sweltering and thick with acrid steam billowing above the Pacific. A dangerous scene…but truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience awaits.

The minor light on the southeastern shore, this small sentry sits guard atop low but impressive cliffs. Head out early to catch the first few rays of sunshine as they greet the northwest-facing bluffs of the Haupu ridge, and fill the guarded inlets below with the never-ending energy of the Pacific.

Guarding the valley below, two thousand foot high cliffs teeming with natural beauty await at the end of the road in the Koke‘e State Park. The famous Kalalau valley and beach are popular conquests for the adventurous on Kaua‘i. Not for the faint of heart, the trek into the valley along the Hanakapi‘ai trail will challenge the experienced hiker, but reward the successful with a unique view of paradise.

The gently stirring Menehune fishpond ripples in the first light of dawn, reflecting the blues, purples and magentas of another sunrise on the Garden Isle. Bordered by the Hulēi‘a stream and guarded by the imposing Haupu mountain range, this ancient fishpond is nestled on the southeastern side of the city of Līhu‘e. The location of this wondrous site of prehistoric and historic significance stands in contrast to the he slowly awakening town just a stone’s throw away. Named after the mythical Menehune people, who according to folklore inhabited the islands before the arrival of native Hawai‘ians, the fishpond is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service.

Not long after the sun has come up, a typical blanket of thick moisture-filled cloud cover rolls over the valley surrounded by the Haupu mountain range, providing just the narrowest of openings, allowing through a spectacular blade of orange sunlight carving it’s way beside the banks of the Hulēi‘a stream and across the valley beyond the historic Menehune fishpond. A favorite sunset location for visitors to the Garden Isle, sunrise here is often as spectacular as it is unpredictable!

Continually erupting since the early 1980s, Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. Active flows from the Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō vent have simultaneously been a significant challenge for the Big Island of Hawai‘i and an unrivalled spectacle to behold. 2016-2017 entry points into the Pacific at Kamokuna provide a front row seat for witnessing the incredible power of nature.

Dubbed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, Kaua‘i’s Waimea Canyon was formed by a number of geologic events including lava flows, erosion, and collapse of portions of the area. The resulting spectacle is as surprising in it’s location in Hawaii as it is magnificent. The unique climate of the canyon area produces a heavy mist on an almost daily basis, often shielding the chasm below. Dramatic waterfalls cascade relentlessly down the precipitous cliff faces into the meandering streams and rivers below.

With explosive energy, rapidly cooling lava shoots into the air above the ocean only to fall back as floating sizzling rocks, and eventually meet their fate at the bottom of the Pacific – a never-ending cycle as Kilauea shares a furious spectacle on the south shore of Hawai‘i Island.

As a typical day winds down on the South Shore of Kaua‘i, this tiny “Baby Beach” remains a popular place to sit, relax, enjoy a drink and watch the sun go down. Hidden within a small neighborhood, this small strip of sand with crescent-shaped pools fringed by protective lava rock, provides the perfect spot to dip your toes, allowing the refreshing Pacific to calm and soothe. A brief rainstorm passing through the Hanalei valley is an almost daily occurrence – soaking showers, a thick blanket of clouds, and dense fog sitting in the ranges towering over the town and bay finally give way to countless pop-up waterfalls streaking their way down the steep mountainsides.
